Re: Children's Books
Flowerchik, have you tried ordering the book through Exclusive books? I often order books online from them and they find what I need. Otherwise there is another website called netbooks.co.za who have the most obscure titles along with the current stuff.

Re: Children's Books
If anybody gets to Cum Books and sees this book please let me know, as it is out of stock. I can find the Afrikaans one, but not the English. I believe it is an excellent book, but can't get my hands on it!

Re: Children's Books
Found a fabulous book yesterday and just had to share (Pattycakes, this one will work for K). The book is called "The Sea Mice and the Stars" and is about mice that collect the fallen stars and use them for lights etc. ISBN: 9781561484904, well worth the read for little ones

Re: Children's Books
I have been begging for bookshelves for years now and it seems to be falling on deaf ears. I will go into Wetherlys when I get my bonus, and buy bookshelves for each family member, that way we may just get those books out of the boxes in the study and off the floor?

Hmmm start piling all the books up next to hubby's bedside table... maybe he'll get the message!!

Re: Children's Books
Hey Patty!!! I bought about 5 books from the Cum booksale at Greenstone (display next to the lifts) on Tuesday. I don't know where I'm eventually going to store/display all the books this family has accumulated. I keep hinting about a book cabinet, now that we're redecorating, but hubby ain't convinced.

GREENSTONE BOOKSTORES SALES!!
So yesterday I went to Greenstone shopping mall, as I wanted to go get some storybooks for Keegan. My luck... nearly all the bookstores had huge specials and I sort of went mad at Cum books. Ok, they were so cheap, and I bought a few prayer books for both K & A. And I found some nice educational stuff at Fascination Books on sale as welll.... so went sort of mad there too! They have these write on and wipe off books on sale, and K already has 2 which I bough long ago, so I bought another .... three! Spelling, Math and Phonics. They did not have the Problem Solving one, otherwise I probably would have taken that one too!!!!!

The Twits
Ok noooow I get it.
The Twits is a children's book written by Roald Dahl and illustrated by Quentin Blake. It was written in 1979, and first published in 1980.
Mr and Mrs Twit are two ugly, smelly, nasty people, who spend their lives playing nasty tricks on each other. Mrs Twit, who uses a walking stick, does not like children. They enjoy treating animals with cruelty, by luring birds to glue-smothered trees so that they can be baked into bird pie, and by tormenting their pet monkeys, Muggle-Wump and his family, by getting them to stand upside down, one on top of the other. One day, the arrival of the Roly-Poly Bird from Africa allows the monkeys and the surviving birds to get the revenge that they have craved for years. They glue the carpet and furniture to the ceiling while the Twits are out, then on their return two ravens land some drops of glue from paintbrushes held in their claws onto the Twits' heads. When the Twits go indoors and see their furniture apparently turned upside down, they stand on their heads, believing that they are upside down and intending to turn the right way up; of course remaining stuck that way. With the Twits out of the way, the Muggle-Wumps are able to return to their native Africa with the help of the Roly-Poly Bird. Eventually, the Twits' bodies collapse into themselves, until there is nothing left but that which they wore or carried with them.

Re: Children's Books
Got to school this morning and J's teacher asked me if I was okay after what happened to J's new green eggs and ham book.
WTF???? She tells me that between J and his friends, they managed to get the book off the shelf and tear the cover off!! :dropjaw: :dropjaw: So I get down to J's level and I ask him why he chose to sneak the book into the car and not tell me that the book was damaged. Snot en trane, he tells me he is sorry . . . that was a new B(^$%*Y book.
I told him that I am emailing Dad to tell him not to bring anything back from Germany for James.
I eventually calmed down and told him that I was more angry at the fact that he didn't tell me that the book got damaged, and that next time he needs to tell me the truth.
I looked at the book when I got back to the car (we never manage to get everything out of the car until the weekend) and I can fix it. The binding goo in the spine obviously hadn't been allowed to heat up properly so the "insides" of the book came adrift from the cover. I will take iron out tonight and heat the spine and put it all back together again and rename the book humpty dumpty

Re: Children's Books
I am not much of a reader myself, and if I do buy a book, it is for self-education/personal empowerment purposes. You can probably see by my Ingliesh that I don't read much
I read a lot on MommiesUnited, and you guys are clever... right? :bkwrm:
But I love to buy books for my kids from CUM Books, they have the most beautiful kiddie bibles and story books.

Re: Children's Books
Just pulling your leg Mons, I would never let my kids read Roald Dahl without supervision
The only place that you are probably going to find a nice kiddies Bible is at a Christian Book Shop. I have seen them at CNA lately but have never had to buy one because James and Kirsten got Bible's and paryer books for their baptisms.

Re: Children's Books
Roald Dahl, not approapriate for a 4 year old. I've got a collection of short stories and extracts from the longer ones, but there's just something about flesh eating Munglewhumpers, and Crocodiles that run around wanting to eat children that apparently isn't suitable for pre-schoolers. Not to mention Snozzcumbers that can also be a bit gross, and giants who steal kids out of their beds...
I just don't like the new stuff. I prefer the traditional, Billy Goats Gruff, kind of story. Maybe I should get a Brothers Grimm or Hans Christiann Anderson collection.
Or maybe a proper kiddies bible? I haven't seen a nice one anywhere. I'll ask my mother for my one.

Re: Children's Books
I am not such a big reader at the moment and haven't been since Kirsty was born but with both my angels getting older and more able to play without my assistance, I am finding time to read a book. I now sit on the patio with my book while the children play and I only look up when one of them screams or it gets too quiet.

Why not? I was reading Roald Dahl at age 6, and I didn't understand some of the inuendo etc but I still found his books entertaining.
